We describe herein a patient who was successfully treated with repeated mechanical thrombectomy within the acute index stroke period. CASE REPORT A 50-year-old woman with atrial fibrillation presented with left-sided weakness caused by occlusion of the right middle c...

Mechanical Thrombectomy with Solitaire Stent Retrieval for Acute Cardioembolic Stroke

Objective Few studies have reported the outcome of mechanical thrombectomy with Solitaire stent retrival (MTSR) in subtypes of acute ischemic stroke. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and result of MTSR in acute cardioembolic stroke. Methods Twenty consecutive patients with acute cardioembolic stroke were treated by MTSR. The angiographic outcome was assessed by thromboly...

Should stroke subtype influence anticoagulation decisions to prevent recurrence in stroke patients with atrial fibrillation?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Long-term anticoagulation is routinely used for secondary stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, often regardless of stroke subtype. Although the role of warfarin in cardioembolic stroke is established, it may not prevent recurrence in other stroke subtypes, even in the presence of atrial fibrillation. METHODS This was a 2-year, prospective, intervention study conduc...

Atrial fibrillation, stroke, and acute antithrombotic therapy.

Antithrombotic Therapy To the Editor: Hart and colleagues1 summarize data for patients with acute presumed cardioembolic stroke from some, but not all, trials studying antithrombotic therapy. We believe that it is appropriate to share relevant data from the Tinzaparin in Acute Ischemic Stroke Trial (TAIST) study, a large trial comparing subcutaneous tinzaparin (a low-molecular-weight heparin [L...
